How to Care for Your Wool Carpet

And Make It Last For Years
A good wool carpet is one of the best investments you can make in your home. It feels extraordinary underfoot, it regulates temperature naturally, it improves air quality, and with the right care it can look beautiful for fifteen years or more. The key phrase there is "with the right care."
We see wool carpets in homes across Leamington Spa and Warwickshire that have aged wonderfully, and we see some that haven't. The difference is almost always down to how they've been looked after. Here's what we tell every customer who chooses a wool carpet.
VACUUM REGULARLY, BUT GENTLY
Wool carpet needs regular vacuuming: ideally two to three times a week in busy areas. But the way you vacuum matters as much as how often you do it.
Use a vacuum without a beater bar (or with the beater bar switched off), particularly on a new carpet. Beater bars can damage the wool fibres and cause premature wear. A suction-only setting or a vacuum designed specifically for wool and natural fibres is ideal.
New wool carpets will shed a little fluff when first vacuumed. This is completely normal. It's simply loose fibres from the manufacturing process working their way out, not a sign of poor quality. It will stop after a few weeks.
DEAL WITH SPILLS IMMEDIATELY
The golden rule with wool carpet: deal with spills the moment they happen. Wool has a natural protective coating that gives you a small window of time before a liquid soaks in. Use that window.
Blot (don't rub) with a clean, white cloth. Rubbing will spread the stain and work it deeper into the pile. Blot from the outside inwards. For most spills, cold water and gentle blotting is sufficient. For anything more persistent, a wool-safe carpet cleaner is the right approach. Never use bleach, biological cleaners, or anything not specifically designed for wool.
Avoid soaking the carpet. Too much moisture can cause the backing to deteriorate or the carpet to shrink.
PROTECT FROM DIRECT SUNLIGHT
Wool is a natural fibre and will fade with prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. If your room gets strong sun, consider using blinds or UV-filtering window film in the sunniest parts of the day. Rotating furniture occasionally can also help ensure even wear and fading across the carpet.
USE A QUALITY UNDERLAY
We mention underlay in most carpet conversations, and for good reason. A good quality underlay extends the life of a wool carpet significantly. It absorbs impact, reduces wear, improves comfort, and helps the carpet maintain its appearance over time. If you're investing in wool, match it with a quality underlay.
PROFESSIONAL CLEANING EVERY 18 MONTHS TO 2 YEARS
Even with regular vacuuming, wool carpets benefit from professional cleaning every 18 months to 2 years. Use a specialist who understands wool, as the wrong cleaning method can cause shrinkage, felting, or colour damage. Always check that any cleaner has experience with wool fibres specifically.
THE REWARD IS WORTH IT
Wool carpet is not low-maintenance, but the care it requires is proportionate to how good it looks and feels. A well-maintained wool carpet in a Warwickshire home can be a fixture for decades. That's a very different relationship to the "replace every few years" cycle of cheaper alternatives.
