The Best Flooring for Families and Pets

Honest Advice from 45 Years in the Trade

If you have children or pets, or as is often the case in Warwickshire, both, you already know that your floor takes a daily battering. Muddy paws, spilled drinks, toy cars, and general chaos are all part of the picture. The question is: what flooring actually stands up to it?

After 45 years advising families across Leamington Spa and Warwickshire on the right flooring for their homes, we've got some clear views on this.

THE HONEST ANSWER: IT DEPENDS ON YOUR PRIORITIES

There's no single "best" floor for families. It comes down to what you care about most. Some people want something they never have to worry about. Others want something that feels warm and comfortable and are prepared to care for it properly. Most people want something in between.

Here's how the main options stack up.

LUXURY VINYL TILE (LVT) - THE PRACTICAL CHOICE

For most families, LVT is the most sensible choice for hard-wearing rooms. It's completely waterproof, scratch-resistant, easy to clean, and available in designs that genuinely look like wood or stone. Brands like Karndean and Amtico have invested heavily in making their ranges beautiful as well as practical, and it shows.

LVT is particularly good for kitchens, utility rooms, hallways, and open-plan spaces: anywhere that sees daily footfall, wet feet, or pet traffic. It can also be laid over underfloor heating, which is a bonus in the colder months.

The main thing LVT doesn't offer is the warmth and softness underfoot that carpet gives you. For bedrooms and sitting rooms where comfort matters as much as practicality, it's worth considering a different approach.

CARPET - THE COMFORT CHOICE (WITH CAVEATS)

Carpet remains one of the most popular choices for family bedrooms and living rooms, and for good reason: nothing else matches the warmth, comfort, and acoustic quality that a good carpet delivers.

The key for families is choosing the right carpet. Look for a dense, short pile (easier to clean than a deep, shaggy cut), a stain-resistant treatment (most modern carpets include this, but it's worth checking), a mid-tone colour (not so dark it shows dust, not so pale it shows everything else), and a quality underlay (often overlooked but crucial for durability and comfort).

Wool-blend carpets tend to be more resilient and longer-lasting than pure synthetic options. They're also naturally soil-resistant to a degree. If your budget allows, they're worth the investment, particularly in rooms that get heavy use.

WHAT ABOUT DOGS IN PARTICULAR?

Dogs are tough on floors in specific ways: claws can scratch softer LVT or wood finishes, and accidents happen (particularly with puppies or older dogs). Our recommendations for households with dogs:

Choose a Karndean or Amtico LVT with a thicker wear layer for scratch resistance. In carpeted rooms, opt for a dense loop pile rather than a cut pile (loops are harder for claws to snag). Avoid very light carpets in dog-heavy rooms (you'll know why after the first muddy walk). Consider a robust stair runner rather than fitted carpet on stairs (easier to replace a section if needed).

A MIXED APPROACH OFTEN WORKS BEST

Many family homes do best with a combination: LVT in the hallway, kitchen, and utility areas; carpet in the bedrooms and living room. This gives you practicality where you need it and comfort where you want it, without compromising on either.

Our team can help you think through the best approach room by room. Come in for a chat and we'll give you an honest steer.
